@samanthaschneidermd Not all Vitamin C is created equal! L-ascorbic acid is the most powerful form, but it’s also super unstable—if your serum turns brown, it’s oxidized and not as effective. And remember, stronger isn’t always better! A well-formulated, stable Vitamin C is the key to glowing skin. ✨ Drop your favorite Vitamin C product in the comments! ⬇️ #NationalVitaminCDay #VitaminCSkincare #SkincareTips ♬ original sound - Samantha Schneider, MD

Vitamin C is one of the most talked-about ingredients in skincare—and also one of the most confusing. There are dozens of different names on labels, different percentages, and wildly different price points. So what’s really going on?

Let’s break it down.

The Gold Standard—With a Catch

The most active form of vitamin C is L-ascorbic acid. It’s the version backed by the most research and is excellent for:

  • Stimulating collagen production
  • Brightening uneven skin tone
  • Fighting free radical damage as a powerful antioxidant

The problem? L-ascorbic acid is not very stable. It can degrade when exposed to light, air, or heat—and it can be irritating for people with sensitive skin.

Why There Are So Many “Vitamin C” Names

To solve those issues, cosmetic chemists created modified forms of vitamin C. These versions are more stable in a bottle and often gentler on the skin.

When you apply these derivatives, they aren’t active right away. Enzymes on your skin—called lipases—help convert them into the active form after application. Because of this slower conversion, they tend to be:

  • Less irritating
  • Better tolerated by sensitive skin
  • Easier to formulate in creams and lotions

So if straight L-ascorbic acid feels too strong for you, choosing a gentler derivative can be a great option.

Ingredients That Make Vitamin C Work Better

Not all vitamin C products are created equal. Two ingredients can significantly boost its effectiveness:

  • Vitamin E
  • Ferulic acid

These antioxidants help stabilize vitamin C and enhance how well it protects and repairs the skin. If you see them paired together on a label, that’s a good sign.

Why Vitamin C Is Worth It

Despite all the confusion, vitamin C truly is a skincare powerhouse. It can:

  • Brighten dull complexions
  • Fade dark spots over time
  • Support collagen for firmer skin
  • Protect against environmental damage

That’s why it’s considered a cornerstone of a solid at-home routine.

The Bottom Line

If you have sensitive skin, don’t feel like you have to use L-ascorbic acid. A gentler form may give you better results simply because you’ll actually enjoy using it.

And if you’re overwhelmed by all the options—you’re not alone. Vitamin C is complicated, but finding the right formula for your skin can make a noticeable difference.

Let's talk a little bit more about vitamin C. So smic acid is the active ingredient, but we've already talked about how it is not a very stable molecule. Not only that, it can be kind of irritating for people with sensitive skin. So cosmetic chemists have modified the molecule to make it more stable in different formulations, and that's why there's so many different names out there for vitamin C.

When you take this vitamin C product, it is not active. Then you put it on your skin and the lipases, these little enzymes that live on our skin, cut off those little fatty acid chains and convert it into the active form. Because when you're putting it on your skin, it is not active. It can be a little bit gentler.

So for people with sensitive skin, choosing one that is not IC acid. Can be a good option. Picking one that has vitamin E in it or ferulic acid. Those are two other ingredients that can help make the vitamin CA little bit more effective, so that can give you better results. Why are we even using vitamin C?

It is a powerhouse antioxidant that stimulates collagen production. It brightens the skin and it can even help. This is such a key part of having a good skincare routine at home. I know vitamin C can be a confusing topic because there are so many products out there and there are so many names for vitamin C.
