Why Skin Checks Matter: Don’t Wait to Protect Yourself

skin cancer tiktok Sep 29, 2025
@samanthaschneidermd One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. That makes it the most common cancer in the U.S.—by far. Most skin cancers are treatable when caught early… but only if you’re looking. If it’s been a while (or never), this is your sign: Call your dermatologist and get your skin checked. #skincancerawareness #getyourskinchecked #preventivemedicine #skincarewithpurpose ♬ original sound - Samantha Schneider, MD

Did you know that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70? That’s a staggering statistic—and it means that chances are high someone you know (or even you) could be affected.

The good news? You have the power to protect yourself. Awareness and early detection can make all the difference.

What to Look For

Pay attention to any spot on your skin that:

  • Is growing or changing in size, shape, or color
  • Starts bleeding without a clear reason
  • Appears as a new mole or mark that feels unfamiliar
  • Simply feels “off” compared to the rest of your skin

If you notice any of these changes, don’t brush them off as “probably nothing.” Skin cancer doesn’t always look alarming—and catching it early is key.

Why Now Is the Right Time

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, making it the perfect reminder to put your health first. Even if you feel fine, taking proactive steps now can prevent bigger issues later. Think of it as a gift to yourself: peace of mind and the reassurance that you’re doing everything you can to stay healthy.

Take Action

  • If you haven’t had a skin check in the past year, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist.
  • Ask questions, even if you’re not sure a spot is concerning. It’s always better to check than to wait.
  • Rely on expert knowledge instead of trying to self-diagnose.

Bottom Line

Don’t let yourself become part of the statistic. Your skin is your body’s largest organ—protect it. This month, make the call, book the appointment, and take care of yourself. Your future self will thank you.

One in five Americans are going to develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Just think about that for a minute. That is like a staggering statistic that is so many people. I wanna help you protect yourself and be educated on what to look for so that you are not one of the statistic. If you are noticing a spot that is growing, changing, bleeding, a new mo, something you're not used to, you have questions.

Now is the time. May a skin cancer awareness month, there is no time like the present to take care of yourself to do something for you. I don't want you to be worried like, oh, what if it's nothing like this is, this is silly. No. Okay. Because sometimes skin cancer does not look like much use this month.

Take care of yourself. Do something for you. At least call your dermatologist. If you haven't been seen in a year and make that appointment. You should rely on expert knowledge. When was the last time you had your skin checked?
