Do You Have to Use Minoxidil Forever? Here’s the Honest Answer

hair hair loss minoxidil tiktok Apr 07, 2026
@samanthaschneidermd Yes, you have to keep using minoxidil if you want to keep your results — and the easiest way to think about it is this: you brush your teeth every day to keep your teeth healthy. You wouldn't stop brushing because your teeth look good. Minoxidil works the same way. Stop using it and your hair reverts back to where it would have been if you'd never started at all. It's not a cure — it's a commitment. Know that going in. Tag someone who needs to hear this 👇 #dermatologist #hairloss #minoxidil ♬ original sound - Samantha Schneider, MD

If you’ve started using minoxidil—or you’re thinking about it—you’ve probably wondered:

“Do I have to use this forever?”

The honest answer?

Kind of… yes.

But let’s break that down in a way that actually makes sense.

Think of It Like Brushing Your Teeth

Using minoxidil is a lot like brushing your teeth.

You brush daily to maintain your teeth and prevent cavities—not because your teeth will instantly fall out if you stop, but because consistency keeps things healthy.

Minoxidil works the same way for your hair.

You use it regularly to:

  • Maintain the hair you currently have
  • Support weaker or thinning follicles
  • Help “wake up” hairs that have become dormant or miniaturized

It’s not a one-time fix—it’s maintenance.

What Happens If You Stop Using Minoxidil?

Here’s the key thing to understand:

If you stop using minoxidil, you’re not suddenly causing new hair loss.

Instead, your hair simply returns to where it would have been if you had never started using it in the first place.

That means:

  • You may notice increased shedding
  • Any progress you gained may gradually fade
  • Thinning related to age or hormones will continue

It can feel like you're “losing more hair,” but really, you're just losing the support minoxidil was providing.

Do You Have to Use It Forever?

No—you’re not required to use anything forever.

But if your goal is to maintain your results, consistency matters.

Stopping treatment means letting go of those results over time.

So the better question might be:

“Do I want to keep the results I’m seeing?”

If the answer is yes, then continuing minoxidil is part of that plan.

A Realistic Way to Think About It

Instead of seeing it as a lifelong burden, think of minoxidil as part of your routine—like skincare or brushing your teeth.

Something small you do regularly that adds up to long-term results.

The Bottom Line

Minoxidil isn’t a cure—it’s a tool.

It helps you hold onto your hair and support healthier growth, but it works best when you use it consistently.

If you stop, your hair simply follows its natural course.

Do you have to use Minoxidil forever? Kind of yes, to be honest. So the way I like to think about it is you brush your teeth every day so that you get to keep your teeth and you're not getting cavities. You're using your minoxidil every day so that you get to keep your hair if you stop minoxidil, it is not that you start losing more hair, but Minoxidil is helping you maintain the hair that you have and helping wake up follicles that have sort of gone to sleep or hairs that have gotten miniaturized.

With the age and hormone related hair loss, if you stop minoxidil, then you go back to where you would be if you had never started it in the first place. Okay? So yes, you're gonna have more shedding because you're using the minoxidil to keep all the hairs that you have, and certainly you don't have to use it forever.

But if you wanna keep your progress, it's like brushing those teeth. Drop your questions below and make sure to follow along.
