3 Hot New Ingredients in Dermatology That You’ll Be Hearing More About
Sep 16, 2025One of my favorite parts of being a dermatologist is staying on the cutting edge of science so I can bring the best, evidence-based treatments back to my patients in Carson City and Northern Nevada. I recently attended the Science of Skin Summit, where leaders in dermatology and skin biology shared exciting updates on emerging ingredients and technologies. Here are three innovations that stood out—and one “honorable mention” that’s close to my heart:
1. Cysteamine for Hyperpigmentation
If you’ve ever struggled with dark spots, melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, you know how frustrating it can be to treat. Cysteamine is an antioxidant that’s showing impressive results in improving stubborn pigmentation disorders. When used topically, it works by interfering with melanin production pathways in the skin—similar to other pigment-lightening agents—but with a favorable safety profile.

At Pacific Crest Dermatology, we carry Senté’s Cysteamine Pigment Correcting Mask, which not only harnesses cysteamine but also includes their patented heparan sulfate technology to further support skin health. It’s an exciting new option for patients looking for evidence-based help with discoloration.
2. Exosomes for Regenerative Medicine
Exosomes are one of the hottest buzzwords in medicine right now. These tiny messengers—naturally released by cells—carry proteins, growth factors, and genetic material that help with cell-to-cell communication and healing. In dermatology, exosomes are being studied for their potential to boost skin repair, stimulate collagen production, and even enhance hair growth.
While research is still evolving, exosomes may become an exciting tool in regenerative aesthetics and wound healing. Patients should stay tuned—as I continue to evaluate the science and evidence, I’ll be determining which exosome-based products are worth incorporating into skincare routines and how to use them safely and effectively.
3. Hydrophobically Modified Polymer (HMP) Technology in Cleansers
Cleansers are often overlooked, but they’re the foundation of a good skincare routine. The challenge? Many foaming cleansers strip away natural oils and disrupt the skin barrier.
Here’s why: most cleansers work by using surfactants—tiny molecules that grab onto dirt, debris, makeup, and oil. The problem is that these molecules are so small they can slip past the outer layer of skin, weakening the barrier and causing irritation and dryness (especially for patients with sensitive skin).
HMP technology changes that. It allows surfactants to still do their cleansing job, but it makes them too large to penetrate into the skin and damage the barrier. The result? A satisfying foamy cleanse—without irritation or dryness. You can try this technology for yourself here.
🌟 Honorable Mention: Heparan Sulfate for Rosacea & Sensitive Skin
As someone who treats rosacea every day, I was excited to hear more about heparan sulfate, a sugar molecule naturally found in the skin. In topical formulations, it helps calm inflammation, repair the skin barrier, and support healing—making it a promising option for people with rosacea and sensitive skin. I carry products with this ingredient in my office because of how well they fit into gentle, evidence-based skincare routines.
A great place to start with heparan sulfate is Senté Dermal Repair and/or Senté Dermal Repair Ultra Nourish. Both are excellent moisturizers that support barrier health and hydration, and, as the seasons start to change, Ultra Nourish is the perfect one to add to your routine right now since it is a thicker formulation for drier skin.
Why This Matters for Patients
Science is always moving forward, and that’s good news for your skin. These new ingredients reflect the growing focus on treatments that are effective, but also gentle and barrier-supportive. At Pacific Crest Dermatology, I’m committed to bringing the latest, safest, and most promising innovations into patient care—because you deserve skincare that’s not only backed by science, but also tailored to your unique needs.
